What is Upset Prevention And Recovery Training (UPRT)?

UPRT is an advanced flying course that will teach you how to maintain control over your aircraft by avoiding potentially hazardous situations in flight.  You will come out of the training having gained knowledge and skills that will help you be a more focused, aware and safer pilot.

Why do an Upset Prevention And Recovery Training course?

As difficult as it is to face, the reality is that things can go wrong without it necessarily being a pilot error.  In fact, loss of control-inflight (LOC-I) has been recognised around the world as the root cause of the majority of aircraft accidents.

As a result, UPRT training has been made mandatory for commercial pilots internationally, and in our opinion is ESSENTIAL for all recreational and private pilots too.  It also provides a strong foundation for other flying training.

What is covered in the UPRT course?

UPRT is a defensive flying course.  You’ll be learning about a wide range of emergency scenarios, what you can do to avoid them and what to do to help get out of them.  It really boils down to awareness and recovery.

Some of the many scenarios covered include:

  • What happens if the aircraft nose is too high or too low?
  • What can cause an aeroplane to spin?
  • How to recognise a stall without the airspeed indicator (ASI)?
  • What to do if an aircraft drops more than expected while recovering?

A full outline of the training is available on request.

Is UPRT training scary?

You may at times find yourself out of your comfort zone, but it is a necessary part of the training.  The great thing is at Curtis Aviation you can relax knowing you’re in safe hands.  Our instructors have done the manoeuvres more times than you could imagine and are all highly trained professionals.

What is the difference between UPRT and EMT (emergency maneuver training)?

There is really no difference between UPRT and EMT, they are just different terms for the same training.

Can I combine UPRT training with tailwheel, aerobatic and formation training?

At Curtis Aviation, yes you can.  Get in contact so we can explain what is possible and how it works.
